Aaron can’t afford to let his long-suppressed sexuality escape his rigid control. When one of his younger wolves is in trouble, it’s simply Aaron’s job as Alpha to help and protect him. But keeping a cool distance from a young man who appeals to all his senses could be Aaron’s toughest challenge.

Blurb:
Nothing wrecks a guy’s day like finding out he’s a werewolf.

From the moment artist Dylan Shore arrives in Chicago, his life gets twisted like a kaleidoscope. Why does a street gang he’s never met before want him dead? Why is a hot but odd mathematician stalking him? And how can half the things Alex Corwin says possibly be true, no matter how honest he seems?

Alex has a frightening dilemma. Dylan is attractive, appealing, out and proud. He’s also completely unaware that he’s a werewolf. It shouldn’t be Alex’s job to tell him, and warn him that gay wolves usually end up dead. But someone has to, before he finds out in blood and violence.

Chicago’s not Alex’s hometown, but somehow he needs to protect Dylan from the local packs, protect the wolves from being outed by Dylan, and keep his cool around the first man to touch his own deeply-closeted heart.

Rory’s going to answer the appeal he’s waited a lifetime for. Some bonds can’t be denied.

Novel – 198 pages
Publication date – April 13, 2023.

Blurb:
Twenty years before Simon found Paul, a decade before Aaron joined the Minneapolis West pack, there were other gay wolves living hidden lives.

Sawyer Holt thought he was dead at the age of sixteen when his brother Leon caught him kissing a human man. Dragged up in front of his Alpha, he could only hope for a painless end, especially when Rick Brown stared at him with an icy gaze and said to Leon, “I’ll take care of it.” Except what Rick gave Sawyer wasn’t death, but a new concealed life.

Until a messenger arrives from Rick, saying that Leon has discovered the ruse, and it’s time to run again. Sawyer’s furious about losing his hard-won life, but intrigued by the young man carrying the message.

James Ferguson doesn’t appreciate being sent from his home and pack in Virginia to run errands for the Chicago Alpha, but as Twelfth out of twelve adult wolves, he’s in no position to complain. The Rebuilding Year
novel – 323 pages, contemporary, mystery
Publication date – March 6, 2012

Blurb: A few excruciating minutes pinned in a burning building cost Ryan Ward his job as a firefighter, the easy camaraderie of his coworkers, his girlfriend, and damn near cost him his left leg. Giving up, though, isn’t an option. Compared to the alternative, choosing a new profession, going back to school, and renting a room from the college groundskeeper are simple.

Until he realizes he’s falling in love with his housemate, and things take a turn for the complicated.

John Barrett knows about loss. After moving twice to stay in touch with his kids, he could only watch as his ex-wife whisked them away to California. Offering Ryan a room seems better than rattling around the empty house, but as casual friendship moves to something more, and a firestorm of emotions ignites, the big old house feels like tight quarters.

It’s nothing they can’t learn to navigate, though. But when dead bodies start turning up on campus—and one of the guys is a suspect—their first taste of real love could go up in smoke.

For John, loving Ryan is as natural as breathing. Now if only the rest of his life would fall into place. Dealing with his teen son is complicated enough, but with his ex-wife causing trouble and his daughter wanting to move in, John’s house—and his relationship with Ryan—threaten to split at the seams.

But from the moment Daniel met Jacob’s eyes across a battle-scarred deck, he knew he had to try.

Being together required figuring out what it meant to be gay and in love with another man, in an era when they could be jailed or committed for admitting the desires of their hearts. On a ship at war, their relationship was measured in stolen moments and rare days of precious leave, with no guarantees there would be a tomorrow. And if they survived the war, they would need even more luck to keep their love alive through all the years to come.

Publication date – Oct 9, 2018.

Blurb: Even with six beloved cats at home, Thom Fletcher can’t help opening his heart to a little injured stray he finds at Pride. Luckily, the generosity of the veterinarian who helps him means he doesn’t have to open his wallet. Thom’s budget is stretched pretty thin, between his struggling start-up and medical expenses for his Crohn’s disease, so the free cat care helps a lot. Dean Edwards went to Pride with his colors on his wrist, hoping to find community after his divorce. Instead, he’s pulled into a cat rescue by an appealing man. Dean likes Thom’s kindness to strays, his blue-gray eyes, his intelligence, and his perspective from decades as an out gay man. Maybe with Thom, Dean will finally feel able to explore his long-neglected attraction to men.

They’re not a perfect match. From Dean’s cat-hating dog to Thom’s chronic health issues and preferences in bed, going from a casual date to something more will be a challenge for both of them.

Within Reach cover image

Within Reach – Fae Story
free short story – 27 pages, bittersweet ending, paranormal
Publication date – April 5, 2012

Blurb: This story was written for an anthology call for Storm Moon Press, back when I had just started publishing. I submitted it in July 2011 and only later found out that no decisions would be made until February of 2012. So I decided to just try to forget I ever wrote this one. Then in February it was returned to me, because SMP had not received enough submissions to put out the anthology.

The anthology call was for stories about an encounter between a human and one of the Fair Folk on Midsummer’s Night. No HEA or HFN ending required. And that’s what I wrote. The end isn’t particularly dark or painful, but the guys don’t walk off into the sunset either. The fae are often complicated and seldom kind, to each other or to the humans they meet by moonlight.

short story – 70 pages, fantasy, *content warning – brief on-page non-consensual sex*
Publication date – September 14, 2012

Blurb: People often say that the true perfection in the human form is in its imperfections. Scars are visceral reminders of a person’s past, a sign of an event that can never fade. Whether it was gained in combat, a traumatic experience, or part of a ritual with a lover, scars are the ultimate labels. They leave a permanent mark on the body and spirit that, one way or another, change a person forever.

Garvin’s lover Nyle has been forcibly drafted by a band of soldiers, and Garvin is determined to get him back. But Garvin is no storybook hero. He finds himself desperately praying to a Goddess he barely believes in for help. Her answer is written on his body in scars, but to rescue Nyle, Garvin will still have to come up with a plan that uses his cleverness and not the brute force he lacks. Then he’ll need the courage to follow through.

Nor Iron Bars a Cage
free novel – 244 pages, fantasy, *content warning – history of abuse, self-harm*
Publication date – June 1, 2013

Blurb:First I was a sorcerer. Then I was a hermit. For so long—for years that seemed to go on forever—I couldn’t bear to be touched. I put up not just walls but whole stone bunkers to keep everyone out, emotionally, and physically as well. I was protected from people, from ghosts, from specters real and imagined. Sure, I was alone. But I felt safe. Only, after a while, I wasn’t sure any longer whether a totally “safe” empty life was really worth living.
Then Tobin came along. Out of the blue, out of my past, with a summons from the king that he wouldn’t let me ignore. I tried to cling to my isolation, but he wouldn’t give up on me. Tobin never believed in walls.

Blurb: He can find a use for his lover’s hands…except when he needs help the most.

Kellen is short on cash—at least until his first novel starts to sell—but he has plenty of friends. None of them, unfortunately, share his love of books. For that he turns to IM chats with Mike from his online book group.

Though he manages to coax the shy, socially inept pathologist into a real-time meeting, Kellen has no intention of letting his new friend become more than a casual lover. Shaky finances and ailing mother aside, self-sufficiency is Kellen’s prime directive.

Mike considers himself a nerd of the highest order—short, bespectacled, prone to blurting out the wrong thing at the worst possible time. Meeting Kellen face to face is the biggest risk of his life, and he wonders if they’ll get more body parts together than just their faces.

First meeting leads to first date—first everything for Mike—and soon Kellen’s faced with breaking his just-friends-with-benefits rule. Yet as his elderly mother wanders deeper into senility, Kellen wonders if it’s better to lean on Mike rather than fall.

When his big brother Sam found him, and insisted on giving him a place to stay, he didn’t resist too long. Living with Sam is better than fighting just to survive, but it’s not easy to find his balance in a simple, small-town life, after his time on the streets.

Travis Brinkerhoff finally managed to come out in college, his second year anyway. It was the one bright side to losing his baseball scholarship and jock status. Chasing Death Metal Dreams
Free Novel (stands alone) – 265 pages, contemporary m/m romance
Publication date – August 1, 2015

Blurb: Carlos Medina has spent years of sweat, pain, effort, and money becoming the man he is. He writes original songs, plays lead guitar, and wears his death metal front-man persona like armor. With an excellent drummer and a talented bassist, his band, KnifeSwitch, has what it takes to succeed, if they can just catch a break. But it’s been a long road already, and there’s still a mountain left to climb. Carlos isn’t looking for anything more in his personal life than an occasional hook-up with a hot guy, preferably outside the less-than-gay-friendly metal scene.

Nate Goldstein has no intention of dating a musician. His twin brother fronts a band, and he knows band guys are all busy, broke, and obsessed with their music. But Carlos catches his artist’s eye. Nate is wary – he has a history of picking the wrong guys. Still, he might be willing to break some personal rules to find out what’s behind Carlos’s dark gaze and imaginative lyrics.

Getting together the first time is easy and fun. The second time is more complicated. And when music, ambition, and personalities clash, the guys will have to decide if they have a future worth fighting for.

52,000 word Novella – paranormal-alternate universe 1960’s m/m romance
Publication date – November 26 2020.

Blurb: An untrained sorcerer and a reclusive necromancer face a ghost-infested town.

Darien is free of his dead invaders, and his eyes have opened to a new reality. In a world of sorcerers and necromancers, he’s full of power and potential, but completely ignorant. Necromancer Silas, and Silas’s cat familiar, Grim, are teaching him basic skills, but danger won’t hold off, just because he’s not ready.

Silas never planned to share his life with anyone, but after a week of shared battles and shared nights, Darien has become a fixture in his home. Silas has never met anyone with more raw magical ability, or less idea what to do with it. When Silas is offered a job hunting ghosts, he’s tempted to refill his depleted bank account, but reluctant to bring untrained Darien along. Darien’s eager to help, though, and eventually Silas gives in. It’s just a few ghosts. Nothing he hasn’t handled before. What could go wrong?

Darien’s ready for a quiet life— back to studying, sleeping with his ridiculously appealing necromancer, playing magical Fetch with his dog-familar. But breaking the demon portals was only a temporary solution, when there are sorcerers out there rebuilding them. Silas is ready to turn the whole hunting-dark-sorcerers mess over to the Guild. Except he doesn’t trust his council members as far as he can throw them, the sorcerer Chicago has sent sets his teeth on edge, and if they get it wrong, Darien’s life is at risk. Found by Jasper: Necromancer Book 7
82,000 word novel- magic and familiars, demisexual, first times
Publication date – June 15, 2023.

Blurb: Jasper and Hamish have no intention of seeking out adventure, but adventure comes looking for them.

Jasper’s curiosity has carried him through encounters with ghouls, demons, world gates, and megalomaniac sorcerers. He plans to spend the next few years cataloging the mansion’s vast and moldering library, and experimenting with magical construction. Professor Xsing, the raccoon not-quite-familiar who’s decided to work with him, has fascinating opinions. Hamish, the sorcerer they rescued, is becoming a friend. It’s silly for Jasper to wish for anything more.

Hamish spent months chained in one small room. Now he lives free in a mansion full of books and friendly people, but adjusting isn’t as simple as it should be. When his past weighs heavily, he can ramble the woods and fields. When he can’t sleep, there’s a nocturnal raccoon happy to share his explorations. But he’s lonely, he misses his own long-lost familiar, and when he thinks he hears her ghost— even though familiars don’t have ghosts— his life is about to be overturned.

Something’s afoot— ghost, spirit, familiar, wood mouse? With Silas, Darien, and their familiars headed off to France, Jasper and Hamish join forces to help those in need. And as they work together, an unexpected chance at love may fill the lonely corners of both their hearts.

Found by Jasper is a novel in the Necromancer series, with our past heroes as side characters. Older MCs, friends to lovers, first times, demisexual. *Content warning for secondary character self-harm on page.*

Magic Burning: Carnival of Mysteries
86,000 word novel- magic meets mundane, coming out,
Publication date – July 26, 2023.

Blurb: Alan

I haven’t been out with a guy in the last two years. Partly because I’m a gay elementary-school teacher in a fairly small, conservative town. Partly because I’m a sorcerer, and dating ordinary humans only leads to trouble. Sleeping with one though? That’s doable, so when my birdbrained familiar Sunny lines up a tall, muscular firefighter for me, I’m not going to say no. Just once, though. Maybe twice. I don’t need more trouble in my life.

Jason

I don’t regret moving back to my hometown and my big family. Well, not much. I’m not out to them, and I miss the anonymity of the big city, but I like the local fire house and the slower-paced life. Still, when I see my niece’s teacher, Mr. Hiranchai, in gray sweatpants talking to a mini-parrot on his shoulder, something inside me (or maybe something in front of me) perks up and says “I want that one.” I can’t have an actual boyfriend, but I sure wouldn’t mind getting laid, and Alan’s slim, dark-haired, smart-assed style rings all my bells.

It’s no surprise we turn out to be great together, even if my job and his responsibilities make it hard to find time. It is a surprise when I realize I want more than just an occasional night. But some weird fires out in the brush keep us firefighters hopping, and when this strange carnival comes to town and lands me with a pair of magical doll shoes, life gets truly confusing. There’s more to Alan than he’s telling me, and I’m getting a bad, bad feeling about all this.

Magic Burning is a story in the Necromancer universe, 60 years after Marked by Death, and is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries Series. Each book stands alone, but each one includes at least one visit to Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. The Carnival changes to suit the world it’s on, so each visit is unique and special. This book contains a snarky, matchmaking bird, a lonely young teacher, and a gay firefighter finally coming out to his large family.

Hidden Blade: The Road to Rocktoberfest 2022
83,000 word novel- rockstar romance, social anxiety
Publication date – October 4, 2022.

Blurb: Sometimes willpower isn’t enough.

Cam

Social anxiety’s been my constant companion for twenty-three years, sometimes in the background, sometimes silencing me and yanking my guts out in the nearest trash can. No matter how much I love playing music, I’m never going to get up on a stage and perform in front of a crowd. But since I met Erik, and was asked to join his band Hellsbane, that knowledge hurts worse.

No heart (even Erik’s) or dick (even Erik’s) is big enough to carry me past my limits, but God, I wish there was a way.

Erik

Life’s damned unfair when a guy with the voice of a hard-rock angel and a songwriting talent like Cam’s can only post anonymous videos online. But you can’t cure anxiety with wanting, or willpower. My drummer needs to quit trying to push Cam onstage with us before he breaks.

Rocktoberfest’s still our goal, and touring with Hellsbane was my only ambition, until I met Cam. Now I can’t have everything I love in one place, but dammit, I wish there was a way.

A first-times, life challenges, coming out, rockstar romance.

Hidden Blade is part of the multi-author The Road to Rocktoberfest 2022 series. Each book can be read as a standalone, but why not read them all.

Rocking Karma: The Road to Rocktoberfest 2023
99,000 word novel- rockstar romance, emotional abuse and karma
Publication date – October 3, 2023.

Blurb:
Dax

I’ve cut and run on my life more than once in my thirty-one years, leaving everything behind, even my name. Now I’m Dax Crow, long lost half-brother and mixing technician for Jameson Crow, the lead singer of Corvus Rising. I’m using my hard-won skills to help my brother make it big. The rest of the band are incidental to me, although new bass player Lane Bennett is a hot mess of young talent who urgently needs someone to take him under their wing. Not my job. I never get close to anyone. Until some douche of a boyfriend begins jerking the kid around, and I’ve been there, done that. Maybe I can at least give him some advice.

Lane

Playing with Corvus Rising is my dream come true, and I can’t believe in October we’ll play for sixty thousand fans at Rocktoberfest. I just hope I can measure up. The last six months have been a steep learning curve, but I have my secret boyfriend to encourage and direct me whenever he’s around. I wish we could go public, but he’s with the record label and it wouldn’t look good. I also have my secret joy— performing drag as Ms. Fox, when I get the chance. It’s hard juggling everything while touring with the band, but I think I have it under control. Then my worlds collide and my boyfriend shows his true face. I find myself getting surprising advice and support from Dax, the gorgeous, secretive guy behind Corvus’s sound. But I doubt even Dax can turn this disaster into a triumph.

    • Book 3 is done in first draft, it needs an edit and then I’ll submit it… Maybe late summer? Real life has been distracting me lately. Thanks for the interest though. I hope you found the two free stories.

  1. Dear Kaje, I really loved Nor Iron Bars a Cage – it is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I want to thank you for providing it for free. I also really enjoyed The Rebuilding Year…will there be a sequel?

    Reply
    • Yes, I’m actually in the middle of a couple of books, one of which is the sequel for The Rebuilding Year. No release date yet though. I’m glad you enjoyed Nor iron Bars 🙂

    • The draft is done, but there’s still some editing to do. I’m glad you liked the first one. Since I hope to self-pub this, there won’t be the publisher delay, but… not this month, anyway. Sorry. Planning is not my forte, and real life is not helping. Maybe the end of May?

  2. I just finished the Life Lessons series…mind blown. Learning Curve was the perfect end. I loved everthing about it, how you dealt with Mac’s recovery, his family, his relationship with Tony, the kids, just everything. Even the bits that weren’t really resolved, like Mac’s screwy family, were wonderful, because they were real. I only wish it weren’t over 🙂 Thank you–thank you very much for writing these books.
Next on deck I got some Wolves and Sole Support, and I’m very much looking forward to them!

    • I’m glad you enjoyed the series. It was hard leaving them, and I don’t rule out a novella someday later, but part of trying to write real is not ever tidying everything off neatly. And I couldn’t get Tony hooked up with any more mysteries right now. So it was time. I hope you like the other books.

  3. Hi Kaje.

I just read ”The family we are born with” and I loved it. Planning to read the 2nd book. Are you planning a 3rd book? if you are do you know who will be the main character?

    Reply
    • I hope you enjoy “The Family We Make” (And I see I still need to add it to this list.) The MCs in book2, Travis and Rick, will play a big role in Book 3 because there is a lot yet to come in their story, but I’m not sure yet how that will play out around them. There may be one or two other MCs. The story is still a bit nebulous.

  4. I bought The Family We Make on the release day but it’s been a crazy few weeks and I just finished it minutes ago. I can’t wait to find out how Travis and Rick’s story unfolds in book 3! I am SO excited there is going to be a book 3. I will keep checking this page for release info. I absolutely loved this book! I was moved to laughter, tears and anger while reading and any book that can pull so many emotions from me will be read again in the future! Thank you so much for such an awesome story. 🙂

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it – thanks for taking the time to say so. The guys do have a long road ahead, and I’m not yet sure where it’s going, but it’ll be fun to write. If you keep an eye on my “Upcoming Releases” box on the upper right of all the blog pages, I’ll list there when it’s on the horizon.

There are a few other projects in the mix first, but definitely I won’t let Travis, Rick and the others languish too long.

  5. I’ve read both “The Family We’re Born With” and “The Family We Make”. Loved them both and anxiously looking forward to another book in the series. I’m very tempted to reread the second one just for Rich’s expletives. They are the most creative I’ve seen or heard in a long time. Kaje always does a wonderful job creating and fleshing out her characters and settings. You can’t go wrong on these books.

  6. Kaje, Is there any thought to having a follow-up for Mac and Tony now that gay marriage is legal in Minnesota? I would love to see them marry in MN and catch up on the kids etc…

    Reply
    • I thought about it. But the last novel is set not long before the marriage referendum in 2012, and legalization was not long afterward. Plus I’m not sure I could top the wedding they already had. I thought about a short story at Mpls gay Pride… maybe. Sometime.

  8. Your Rebuilding Year and Life Lessons series are some of my very favorites! I was so pleased to see the first book of Rebuilding Year on Audible. The choice of the narrator was perfect. Will the rest of the series also come out on audio?

Also, the Life Lessons Series and Hidden Wolves would be great on audio!!! Please!!!

Thank you for your wonderful stories! I have many of your works and have enjoyed them so much that I re-read them over and over.

    Reply
    • Thanks so much for the encouragement. I’m so pleased you enjoy my work! I am hoping to get Gomez Pugh to do “Life, Some Assembly Required” – the issue is finances. It costs over $3000 up front to commission the audio. And Amazon/Audible just launched their “Romance Package” for audio which is a lot like Kindle Unlimited for ebooks. When KU launched, authors like me saw their royalties drop sharply on ebook sales, and they’ve never recovered. I don’t know if that will happen for audio sales now, but I’m waiting just a little before moving forward with more audio.

For the MLR books, I have to buy back the audio rights as well – I’d love to do more audio, but so far with two books out I’m a couple thousand in the red still. So I’m moving slowly. Sorry.

  9. Hi, Kaje.

“Intervention” and “The Benefits of Ductwork” are not available on Amazon anymore, so you might want to update the post.

Also, will there be any more in the Hidden Wolves series? I’d like it if there were!

    • Thanks! They are charity stories, so I don’t get royalty reports on them and no one said anything. I’ll fix the listing.

I am planning at least one more Hidden Wolves – going back to Zach and Aaron. Hopefully this year, although at least Tracefinder 3 comes first. I’m glad you enjoy them.

      Reply
  10. Hi! I really like the Tracefinder series — any chance you could tell more? Maybe about Damon? Because you set him up really nicely for, like, a future, and now I want to know what happens to him.

    Reply
    • I am planning probably 2 more Tracefinder books – the third (wrapping up Nick and Brian’s arc) is 3/4 written but it went off track somewhere, so I’m letting it sit for a bit before trying to fix it. It will be next after the one I’m writing now. I do want to do Damon’s book too. I think he could be really interesting to watch evolve now his family is safer… and I kind of like Damon for all his flaws.

I’m glad you enjoyed these. Thanks for asking.

  11. I really love your books. I found Unacceptable Risk in Finnish (your only book translated in Finnish?) and after reading it I needed to read the rest of Hidden wolves in English, and then your other stories. I’m maybe half way now, happy that there are still something to wait for.
I don’t usually read English literature so it has been good practise for my language skills. Thank you!

    Reply
    • Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by. Yes, sadly Unacceptable Risk is my only book in Finnish – the publisher/translator stopped communicating with me after I signed the contract in 2017, (and hasn’t ever sent any royalties, and her email bounces.) I wasn’t even aware that the book was completed and put out there. But it’s kind of cool that it is and I’m particularly glad if the translation was good enough to make you want to read the rest of the series.

I continue to be amazed by all the folks reading M/M in a second or third language for fun. That’s impressive. I’m delighted if you are enjoying my stories.

      Reply
      • I’m really sorry to hear the you haven’t received your royalties, but at least you got one to buy the rest in English who wouldn’t otherwise have found your books.
Liian suuri riski is for sale here (https://kirja.elisa.fi/ekirja/liian-suuri-riski) but unfortunately no contact info for the publisher. It a seems to be a small company, no web pages but it still exists (Telum Saxum, Hoviherrankatu 3 B 32, 20780 Kaarina, Finland). No email address available.

        • Thanks so much for the info and checking for me. And for the link – fun to see that, even if it bugs me a bit that they are still selling it. Well, at least it’s advertising for my writing in a new place. 🙂 A pity it didn’t work out with them to do the series, but maybe there will be some better opportunity someday.

In the meantime, I’m pleased they brought you to my stories.

  12. Good afternoon from Washington State,

I’ve been reading your book for a while, but finally had the chance to read Finding Family series. I was wondering is there or will there be more to the stories?

Both stories really called to me.
    Thank you

    Reply
    • I’m so pleased you liked those books. I had originally planned a sequel called “The Family We Keep” and even had the cover (and had written about 35,000 words of it), but I got stuck. Since then, the passage of time makes it a bit hard to go back to – the appearance of PrEP for one thing alters the dynamic of that relationship. Both men are so young, and I envisioned staying together would be as challenging as getting together, but the guys haven’t stepped up and started telling me their story. So I have to say a slim maybe.
