Thoroughly.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd once again, mating behavior gets in the way of substantive discussion,\u201d Grim muttered, jumping onto the counter to nudge Silas\u2019s elbow. \u201cAnd in the way of opening the tuna can.\u201d He reached out a large, hairy paw to push Silas\u2019s mug an inch closer to the edge.<\/p>\n Silas pulled away from Darien reluctantly, ignoring Grim, although not without a little worry for the fate of his coffee. \u201cUnfortunately, I can\u2019t leave town. I promised Worthington I\u2019d be there.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cDon\u2019t let them talk you into saving the world without me.\u201d A hint of worry clouded Darien\u2019s dark eyes.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m more likely to be asked to do discounted ghost-clearing for some powerful friend of theirs.\u201d He meant that as reassurance for Darien, but on reflection, a demand for his services was a definite possibility. Worthington\u2019s ponderous \u201cYou must commit to being there\u201d<\/i> could as easily be because he wanted to please the Governor or some millionaire, not any actual necromantic crisis.<\/p>\n Grim said, \u201cYou can count on me to make sure Silas is paid what he\u2019s worth, young Darien. Although only if he opens the tuna<\/i>.\u201d A little coffee slopped out of the mug with the next push.<\/p>\n Darien pulled a drawer wide, fished out the can opener, and passed it to Silas. \u201cBetter feed him before he starves to death.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWouldn\u2019t want that.\u201d Silas cut the lid off the tin and set the fish down on a clean plate, then put half a tin of dog food for Pip in a bowl.<\/p>\n Pip\u2019s tail became a white blur as Silas placed the bowl on the floor. \u201cOh good. I really, really like this food.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cProcessed mush,\u201d Grim muttered over his meal. \u201cProbably hooves and tails and whatnot.\u201d<\/p>\n Pip pulled back a moment, ears drooping, then dove back in. \u201cIt\u2019s tasty. I like it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou tell him,\u201d Darien encouraged. \u201cYou get to like what you like. Anyway, Silas buys top quality for you.\u201d<\/p>\n Pip cleaned the bowl with a sweep of his tongue and licked his lips. He cocked his head. \u201cNow what?\u201d<\/p>\n Darien drained his mug. \u201cNow I need to pack before our dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll keep you company.\u201d Pip trotted out, and Darien followed. A moment later the scamper of toenails on the steps was followed by Darien\u2019s bounding strides. The sounds died away upstairs.<\/p>\n Silas picked up his coffee and sipped it slowly. He realized he was still listening, tuned to the occasional creak or thump from overhead. \u201cIt\u2019ll be awfully quiet with those two gone for a week.\u201d<\/p>\n Grim huffed and daintily licked up another bite of tuna. \u201cA restful change.\u201d<\/p>\n Silas couldn\u2019t resist tweaking him. \u201cCome on, you\u2019ll miss Pip. Admit it. He\u2019s like family now.\u201d<\/p>\n Grim sat back and cleaned his whiskers. \u201cPerhaps. Like the half-wit younger brother I never asked for.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cDon\u2019t you think that\u2019s a bit harsh?\u201d<\/p>\n The big cat tilted his head, as if considering. \u201cNo.\u201d He stalked out, plumed tail waving, paws silent on the tiles.<\/p>\n Silas smiled after him, but gradually his smile faded. Life was<\/i> going to be quiet. He and Darien hadn\u2019t spent a night apart since that gorgeous, ghost-ridden young man fell in across his threshold almost three months back.
